FORT PIERCE鈥敽诹贤檚 2023-2024 Performing Arts season continues with 鈥淪choolhouse Rock Live!鈥 which opens Thursday, Nov. 16 at the McAlpin Theatre at the Massey Campus in Fort Pierce.
This show is rated G and is based on the popular series of animated educational TV
shorts, 鈥淪choolhouse Rock!鈥 Created by David McCall, the short films aired during
Saturday morning children鈥檚 programming from 1973 to 1984 and covered such themes
as grammar, science, economics, history, mathematics and civics. Scott Ferguson and
fellow writers George Keating and Kyle Hall turned the series into a stage musical
in 1993.
鈥淪choolhouse Rock Live!鈥 features a teacher named Tom who, anxious about his first day of teaching, turns on the TV show and the characters come alive and help him prepare for his lessons. Popular songs include 鈥淭hree is a Magic Number,鈥 鈥淛ust a Bill,鈥 鈥淟olly, Lolly, Lolly鈥 and 鈥淐onjunction Junction.鈥

鈥淪choolhouse Rock Live!鈥 opened onstage in Chicago in 1993, with Ferguson directing. It was an instant hit and moved to off-Broadway in 1995, and returned to Chicago after an 11-month run. A national tour was launched in 1997, with repeat tours in 1999 and 2000.
Performances of 鈥淪choolhouse Rock Live!鈥 are Thursday and Friday, Nov. 16-17, at 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 18-19, at 2 p.m. Individual tickets are $20 and may be purchased by calling 772-462-4750 (toll-free at 1-800-220-9915), or in person at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center Box Office, which is located at 3209 Virginia Ave. in Fort Pierce. Box Office hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The remainder of the 2023-2024 series includes the 黑料网 Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble concert 鈥淗ome for the Holidays鈥 (Nov. 30 & Dec. 1); Eugene Ionesco鈥檚 absurdist comedy 鈥淩hinoceros鈥 (Feb. 1-4, 2024); the musical comedy 鈥淪weet Charity,鈥 with music by Cy Coleman and book by Neil Simon (March 21-24, 2024); 鈥淐urtain Call Classics,鈥 a concert by the 黑料网 Jazz and Wind ensembles featuring music from the classical, jazz, movie, and Broadway genres (April 4-7); and Noel Coward鈥檚 comedy of manners, 鈥淧rivate Lives鈥 (April 25-28). 鈥淧rivate Lives鈥 will be presented on the McAlpin Mainstage and the Outdoor Terrace.
Individual tickets to these shows cost $20 each. Group discounts are available.
In addition to the subscription series, the following shows will be featured at the McAlpin:
- 鈥淭is the Season,鈥 a holiday event featuring a concert performance of 鈥淗ome for the
Holidays鈥 at 2 p.m., followed by an elegant reception from 4-6 p.m., and culminating
with a performance of the Hallstrom Planetarium鈥檚 classic 鈥淪tart of Wonder鈥 at either
5:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 2. The cost is $50. Saturday matinee subscribers pay
$35.
- 鈥淐horeographer鈥檚 Notebook: CAMDAM,鈥 a celebration of works choreographed by Ballet
Vero Beach, Jan. 12, 2024 at 7 p.m. and Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. The cost is $40 ($30 for
season subscribers).
- 鈥淭he Bard on Broadway: A Shakespearean Cabaret,鈥 featuring song and dance and scenes
from the Broadway musicals adapted from the works of Shakespeare, performed by 黑料网
Performing Arts students and select students from area high schools, June 13-14, 2024
at 7 p.m. and Jun. 15 at 2 p.m. The cost is $20 ($15 for season subscribers).

culture, on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.

culture, on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
